Writers, like artists, actors and other creatives, need to play in order to work. Play stimulates our imagination and fills us with enthusiasm. It is the very source of  creativity and uniqueness. We invite you, then, to abandon routine rationality and indulge in a few minutes of fun.

Writers Don't Get No Respect

I was at the park, briskly walking off yet another encounter with yet another snippy editor and pondering the Big Question--"Why is it that writers don't get no respect?"--when I walked smack into the answer. There, blocking further progression of my face, was a large, yellow warning sign. "Warning!" it said. "Do not feed the alligators."

Here in Florida, where I live, the landscape is dotted with signs warning of dangers ranging from aggressive alligators and bad dogs to sharks and stinging jellyfish. Consequently, people show these critters some respect. And there you have it. All that writers need to garner the respect they so rightfully deserve is a good assortment of warning signs.

Later, as I sat at my computer designing Warning Signs For Writers, I pondered the cosmic implications implicit in my having been shown, literally, a sign. Perhaps the Universe is more responsive to my thoughts than I ever realized. Maybe the Creator really does listen to the secret whisperings of our hearts and sends us exactly what we need to work our own miracles. Because surely editors have shown me more respect  since I started wearing a sign around my neck that reads "Warning! Do Not Reject The Writer!"
