There are two ways to teach reading to preschool students. These are what educators call whole language and phonics. Most teachers prefer to use both methods in combination to develop a child’s reading skill. Phonics, however, is preferably used if a teacher wants children to learn how to read faster.
The difference between the two methods
Phonics teaches children in preschool how to read words by conditioning them to remember what those words sound like. It is like muscle memory through sound. This allows children to be able to develop in reading through phonemic awareness and spelling patterns. This also means that phonics is a little easier than whole language, which focuses more on the meaning of the word rather than how it sounds. This means that the whole language method is equally important but slightly harder for young children to understand.
Using phonics to teach children develops their phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to link letters with their correct sounds. It is a good way to improve reading and spelling because children will then have a better idea of how each letter should sound. This also means that learning to pronounce words properly will be more second nature to children.
Recognising spelling patterns
It is much easier to recognise spelling patterns when a child understands how words sound. By recognising these patterns through sound, it becomes much easier for the child to read words without second thought. This also makes reading multi-syllabic words much easier.
Using phonics is not the perfect way to teach a child how to read. Teachers should depend on how the child will respond to it. Some children respond better to the whole language method. This is why most teachers use a slight combination of both. However, if you want your child to learn how to read faster, phonics is the best teaching method.
